Greece has more than 200 inhabited islands, which makes planning a first trip surprisingly hard. This one-week itinerary keeps it simple: Athens, Naxos and Santorini, a mix of ancient history, beautiful beaches and that famous caldera view, connected by easy ferries.
Itinerary at a glance
| Days | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Athens | Acropolis, Plaka, rooftop dinners |
| 3–4 | Naxos | Long sandy beaches, mountain villages, great food |
| 5–7 | Santorini | Caldera views, sunsets, volcanic beaches, wine |
Days 1–2: Athens
Visit the Acropolis first thing in the morning to avoid heat and crowds, then explore the Acropolis Museum and the old neighborhoods of Plaka and Monastiraki. Book Acropolis tickets online for a timed entry, especially in summer. Enjoy dinner on a rooftop with a view of the illuminated Parthenon.
Days 3–4: Naxos
Take a ferry from Piraeus or Rafina to Naxos, one of the most underrated Cycladic islands. Spend time on long, sandy beaches like Agios Prokopios and Plaka Beach, watch sunset at the Portara (the giant marble doorway by the harbor) and drive up to mountain villages like Halki and Apeiranthos.
Days 5–7: Santorini
A short ferry ride takes you to Santorini. Stay in Fira or Imerovigli for caldera views, or in Kamari or Perissa for better value and black-sand beaches. Walk the clifftop trail from Fira to Oia, take a catamaran cruise around the caldera, visit a winery and catch the famous Oia sunset (arrive early, as it gets very crowded).
Tips for this Greek islands itinerary
- Book ferries in advance in summer, and check schedules on official ferry company sites or a ferry booking platform.
- Travel in May, June or September for warm water, fewer crowds and lower prices than July and August.
- Santorini is busy during the day when cruise ships are in port. Explore Oia early in the morning or later in the evening.
- Pack comfortable shoes: island villages are full of steps and cobblestones.
FAQ
Is one week enough for the Greek islands?
One week is enough for Athens plus two islands. Any more islands and you’ll spend too much time on ferries.
Why Naxos instead of Mykonos?
Naxos has better beaches, more affordable hotels and a more authentic feel. If you want nightlife, swap Naxos for Mykonos.
Should I fly or take the ferry?
Ferries are scenic and connect the islands well. Flights from Athens to Santorini are quick if you’re short on time.
